What to Expect

What you will see with your pregnancy will depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy.

Prior to 4 weeks, you may see a normal endometrium or endometrial thickening.

  • 4 weeks: The gestational sac may appear as a small, fluid-filled area in the uterus.

  • 5 weeks: The gestational sac becomes more distinct and may have a yolk sac, which provides nutrients to the developing embryo.

  • 6 weeks: The fetal pole (early embryo) may also become visible at this time. This is the most accurate way of dating and is the gold standard.

Prior to 6 weeks, you will not see a heartbeat.

  • 6 weeks: The heart starts to develop, and a transvaginal ultrasound may be able to show a "flicker" or early motion.

  • 7 to 8 weeks: The heartbeat is typically more consistent and easier to detect with a transvaginal ultrasound.

  • 9 to 12 weeks: The heartbeat can usually be detected with an abdominal ultrasound, though it is much more reliable by the end of the first trimester.
